Unlike traditional implicit approaches used to improve grammatical forms used by children with developmental language disorder, explicit instruction aims to make the learner consciously aware of the underlying language pattern. Functional categories provide a skeleton for sentence construction and a foundation for grammatical organization throughout acquisition. Evidence suggests that language acquisition in the child, which begins long before first words, includes a continuous acquisition of functional categories. The article selects highlights of critical evidence emerging from various methods, languages and developmental periods, and articulates leading questions that now confront our field. While lexical categories have long been assumed to be foundational to language acquisition, now functional categories have been revealed to play a foundational role. In this article, the authors review a transformation that has occurred in the field. discrimination, comprehension, production, neurophysiological) and a variety of languages, and extends the study of functional categories throughout development, beginning in infancy. This new research involves a wide range of methodologies (e.g. Over the last decades, however, a growing body of empirical research has come to contradict the traditional view. Traditionally, it was assumed that children’s language development initially relies on lexical elements, while functional elements become accessible only at later periods and that it is lexical growth which bootstraps grammatical development. Scholars of language development have long been challenged to understand the development of functional categories. The appendix to the paper consists of a brief introduction to the OntoLex-Lemon model. Finally, in the conclusion, we look ahead at some future challenges for LLD models and vocabularies. In the next part of the paper, we focus on the influence of projects on LLD models and vocabularies, starting with a general survey of relevant projects, before dedicating individual sections to a number of recent projects and their impact on LLD vocabularies and models. ![]() After which we look at some of the latest developments in community standards and initiatives including descriptions of recent work on the OntoLex-Lemon model, a survey of recent initiatives in linguistic annotation and LLD, and a discussion of the LLD metadata vocabularies META-SHARE and lime. Next, we give a general overview of existing vocabularies and models for different categories of LLD resource. The article begins with an overview of some recent trends which have had a significant impact on linked data models and vocabularies. This article provides a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of models and vocabularies for creating linguistic linked data (LLD) focusing on the latest developments in the area and both building upon and complementing previous works covering similar territory.
